Special Guests

We are excited to have reigning Indy 500 champion Tony Kanaan join us for breakfast this year! The Chip Ganassi Racing driver will be joined onstage by Susie Wheldon, the wife of the late 2005 and 2011 Indy 500 champion, Dan Wheldon, and their good friend and winning 2011 car owner Bryan Herta.

We will also be joined by KV AFS Racing driver and pole-sitter of the Inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis, Sebastián Saavedra. In one of the most interesting Bump Day stories in recent years, Sebastián watched from the hospital as failed attempts by both Paul Tracy and Jay Howard put him and his wounded Bryan Herta Autosport machine into the 2010 Indy 500 as a rookie. He will be competing in his fourth Indy 500 this year, hoping to improve on his best finish of 23rd in his three previous attempts.

Jon Beekhuis, the 1988 Indy Lights champion and now an analyst for NBC Sports Network’s coverage of IndyCar, will be joining us.

And we will also have World War II veteran Arthur L. Carter Sr., a member of the ground crew for the famous Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military aviators in the United States armed forces.

Now Featuring the Pennzoil Lone Star Johnny Rutherford Award

This May we will be awarding the second annual “Lone Star J.R. Johnny Rutherford Award”. This award was created to honor the IndyCar participant who best exemplifies outstanding character, integrity and service in the home, at the track and in the community. The Award is named after Johnny Rutherford who has won the Indianapolis 500 three times. In 1987 he was inducted into the Auto Racing Hall of Fame at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in 1998 he was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, and the Motorsports Hall of Fame in America. J.R. is an individual of great character who has served his family and community faithfully through the years and is a role model for drivers and business people alike, and will be in attendance to help us present the award.

We are very pleased to announce that Pennzoil has chosen to sponsor the award, ensuring that we will be able to present it for years to come. Please join us in thanking Pennzoil for supporting our recognition of outstanding members of the IndyCar community.

The Program

The event will feature a multimedia presentation of the rich history of the race and its fans while honoring a number of drivers, teams and luminaries past and present. Well known guests will be interviewed and regale us with stories of Indy racings greatest memories. We will also have the presentation of the Pennzoil Lone Star JR Award.

Once again, our Master of Ceremonies for the event is Jack Arute. From ABC Sports and ESPN to Versus and MRN, Jack has covered motor racing for decades. In addition to his TV and radio interests, Jack’s family has also owned Stafford Motor Speedway since he purchased the track in 1969.

What started as an idea in 2007 is becoming one of the cornerstones of Legends Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Join us for breakfast before moving on to the autograph sessions in the Pagoda Plaza, the public Drivers Meeting in Pit Lane, and many other events. The meal itself will be a variety of hot foods, pastries and fruit – a VIP breakfast. The food will be provided by Ritz Charles located in Carmel, Indiana.
